Public School Sponsorship

WHGA partners with local public schools to significantly enhance academic achievement in Harlem’s District 5 schools, expand the community’s educational capacity and resources, and empower local residents with a wide range of information and tools to further help lead their children into personal and educational growth.

The Educational Sponsorship task is to:

Develop and operate innovative In-School and After School educational enrichment programs, to enhance the Harlem community. Help increase reading and math scores in local District 5 schools. Assist in building stronger support groups and relationships with the community. Scheduling educational seminars for parents providing additional tools, in support of their child’s progress in school. Although there are many after school programs in the Harlem area, a report given by the Department of Education in 2004 seems to indicate that there needs to be more organized efforts to combat the low literacy and low math scores within community schools. WHGA is the process of developing and strengthening partnerships between teachers, parents, students educational administrators and other community organizations to make a concerted effort to improve the educational status of the Harlem community.
