Meet Our Leadership

At WHGA, we believe in the talent, potential, and dedication of people and residents in our very community. That is why most of our team has close ties to Harlem. Some were born, raised, and grew up not too far from our headquarters. Others are familiar with Harlem’s deep-rooted history, dating back to Harlem’s Abandonment Era up to its present-day prosperity, which we often refer to as the “Second Harlem Renaissance.”

Our staff is guided by a leadership team that is committed to WHGA’s vision. That said, our leadership is invested in a Harlem that ensures all responsible residents, community-based organizations and other stakeholders in our community are mobilized and firmly committed to working together willingly and cooperatively. The vision starts with us. As leadership and staff, we work diligently to represent Harlem the way we envision it – a safe and socially stable, healthy, economically-sound, well-educated, informed and politically strong community.

Today, a team of more than 100 employees operate WHGA’s programs and serve as the “faces” of the nearly 50-year-old organization that touches the lives of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers each year.

A Note from the Executive Director

I remember visiting Harlem as a child. It was a place filled with so much activity – a place of movement.

And I agree with Langston Hughes, “I was in love with Harlem long before I got there.”

Harlem is the mecca of black American culture; known for its history, politics, economics, art and cuisine. My interest in Harlem then and now lies in the people: the mothers, fathers, grandparents and children, alike. I’d like to think just like those people, West Harlem Group Assistance has been in the forefront and a fixture of this community, upholding over 45 years of culture.

As we move to a greater culture, even as we develop a greater more innovative Harlem, the core of our brand will remain the same: securing a diverse and vibrant community. In the midst of Harlem’s Second Renaissance, West Harlem Group Assistance has been granted the unique privilege to serve as the community’s social lever, defending and building a more inclusive Harlem. I see this brand book as a guide to preserving the identity of the families we proudly serve and shaping the dynamic community we know Harlem will grow to be.

We value your collaboration in maintaining our brand and mission and appreciate your efforts in championing the people of Harlem.
